From my experience, a lot of the harley and cruiser guys are just as cool as the sportbike crowd. They don't typically ride in the same ways with the same goals, but they're just as friendly when they pass me and just as enthusiastic when they get off. I'm sure there are some stuffy douchebags out there who are too hardcore to wave or give the police warning or what have you, but it seems like most people on two wheels are just happy to see other people riding, regardless of what subset of the culture you subscribe too.
Except for those guys on scooters................
