The one that's commonly used, as I mentioned recently, is made so that when a Zener diode sees its Zener voltage it conducts and turns on an SCR so that it that shorts the alternator output for that half wave. It's either out of the circuit or shorts the alternator, at high speed, and nothing inbetween.

I believe linear regulator it also know as LDO (Low Dropout Voltage Regulator)
