Yes - you are on the right track.

Most will agree that the engine runs best with an original airbox.

In addition, it's very possible you may need to remove and clean the carbs, which requires some patience and research to do it properly the first time.

You can try installing an airbox and doing some basic tuning of the idle mixture screws, then test riding to see if the carbs need attention.

The carb type on the Ninja, a Constant Velocity (CV), doesn't like to be whacked-open quickly. They work much better with a smooth roll-on of the throttle, even when properly tuned.

Make sure the fuel is fresh, and you have a good fully charged battery, before doing any testing.
