I sometimes wonder myself, but after going to BMST this year I have a better understanding of some of the challenges of running on salt. (I wasn't racing but crewed for a friend who runs an electric streamliner.) It *is* a difficult environment and I think that's part of the attraction (freakin' salt gets everywhere!). Also, although I don't think the run-up was as long this year as it's been in the past (International Course) the distance gives more of a chance to determine true top speed. Run-up is less of an issue on pavement if you're power limited, but for the truly high power machinery, getting the power down and accelerating on an unprepared course is a different sort of challenge.
