I belive it has to do with the fact that the exhaust runs on the #2 side. That, and the H-pipe probably has a tuned length. The position of that pipe (how far from the exh valve) is probably also result of trial and error.
The engine fires #1 -180°, 2#. Then 540° nothing.
So, when the first cylinder has a longer pipe to collector, that makes exhaust pulses cross over each other even more.
Many Asian aftermarket manifolds have the pipes just running parallel. Without an H-pipe.
