I understand your points and don't disagree except for the fatigue part. I doubt if the steel parts get above the fatigue limit very often or at all. Aluminum doesn't have a fatigue limit, so in theory parts like wheels will eventually crack, but you're talking many, many millions of stress cycles. My 1978 Lester wheels are still rolling along fine.
