Do you have a meter?
Air compressor will run no matter what polarity you use on it. On the other usb thing, you probably fried the diode by hooking it backwards(then its a short either way you hook it up). < I have picked up lots of good stereos & radios people thought were broke....... clip the diode and good to go.
