Kerry, I owe you a beer. If you had not suggested getting a meter I would have been done. It is now as it should have been.
A few things conspired to work against me through this: 1) Not having a multi meter, 2) being electrically inept. I did have it wired bass-ackward and that was causing the usb adapter to fail. When I switched leads the first time I must not have made a good connection on one of the wires because nothing worked in the outlet. The second re-re-wire was also wrong. I was messing with the meter checking voltage and noticed the wall of the cig plug was hot. I believe Kerry said the center was supposed to be 12v so I made the switch again and presto! Thanks to all for help/suggestions.
