I say go for it.

Readers digest: editing is key! Doesn't have to be splashy/hi-tech, just tastefull, and simple. ( and good microphone sound..or if no sound, music that captures the feeling of the video)

Of course "mainstream" vloggers have all sorts of expensive stuff today. But it can be quite good, on limited budgets. To me, the biggest thing to capture an audience is the quality of content. In some cases, I've run across a few videos where almost nothing was said, just delightful camera angles of a bike motoring through woods, a few off camera shots of nature, etc.

Camera set-up, editing software, and...time.. Lots of time editing. But go for it!
