It sounds like there is nothing special I should look for in the 250R aside from typical things when buying used.

EDIT: Another thing; I've ridden a 500R once, and the fairings rattled like it was their job. Is this typical or perhaps there was some loose bolts on that bike?
I think you will be okay if the valves aren't adjusted. But prolong/high rpm use can cause the valves to melt. Symptoms would include bike not idling right and bike dying when pulling in the clutch while coming to a stop. It also a PITA to adjust them while the engine is in, lol.
