When there isn't much in the bag I handle the sturdyness problem by not always zipping the outside zip all the way around. I just zip it all the way across the edge of the bag that runs parallel to my back and leave the rest open. It makes the bag wedge shaped. Looks better than having it kinda flop to the side when it's half full.
