Could be a fuel delivery issue, so check the screens on the petcock and the internal filter at the carb inlet. If the petcock has a reserve setting, give that a try to see if it affects it.

I'd also pop the fuel filler cap when you feel it start to slow down to listen for air rushing in, telling you there a venting issue.

Check the air filter. How much oil is in the airbox?

Was the engine in the normal temp range?
