yep, wash and wax that area. I always thought paint was resilient enough until I ended up with gas caught in the overflow area surrounding the gas cap area. The gas sat there for a number of days and lifted the paint right off the metal!
Since then, I'm a lot more cautious about how long I leave gas sitting on painted surfaces.
