Newer R6 has had problems with the sides of the tanks being damaged easily in crashes due to the shape of the tanks and how they are slightly pointy on the side. The problem is so common that they actually make tank sliders for the newer R6.

My guess is that he may have lowsided and caught the side of the tank on the ground causing a fuel leak which lead to combustion from friction.
