Well, there's idea that more peaceful Homo neanderthalensis was killed off by more violent Homo sapiens about 40 000 years ago. I suspect many of them survived and have learned to hide from us.
Several of my friends who were deployed in Afghanistan told me story about giant that was killed there. Body was quickly whisked off via helicopter and never to be seen again.
Heck, if giant eels can exist, why can't giant humans?
