Currently, Indiana is one of 30 states nationwide that allow at least some motorcyclist the choice of wearing a helmet when they ride. If the National Transportation Safety Board goal is achieved, all states will require motorcyclist to ride with an approved helmet.

Under the federal government pressure, Indiana enacted a motorcycle helmet law in 1969. With the Department of Transportation financial penalties removed, Indiana repealed the motorcycle helmet law in 1977. Since 1984 Indiana has required that people 17 and younger are required to wear a helmet when operating or riding as a passenger on a motorcycle.
