My real problem is the key, or how to get a new one. The piece of key is broken off pretty far into the cylinder. Is it a major PITA to get the ignition cylinder out?
Get some really fine music wire from a hobby shop, bend a little "j" in the end of it, and see if you can fish the broken bit of key out. The actual key code is stamped on the bottom of the ignition lock housing, but to see it you have to pull off the fairing and I think the instrument cluster, Not that big of a deal. The key code will be in the form of Z5XXX (yes, there were only around 900 different keys).

Some info on keys that may be helpful:

It's really easy to rekey the gas, helmet, and seat locks to match the ignition lock, and since the ignition lock by far is the most expensive and hardest to replace it's generally desired to make the other locks match it.
