Partial answer. Your ability to brake massively is conditional.

You shouldn't GRAB a massive amount of brake all at once. That pops you over the limit of traction. But if the tire is already loaded, you can pull mighty hard... much harder than a pull that would break traction if done suddenly.

Ienatsch: "Load the tire before you work the tire."

Reason: When you brake progressively, the tire squishes and flattens out, increasing the size of your contact patch before you push it to the limit. In other words, the traction limit increases while you're still on the safe side of it.

The problem in a last-possible-second panic situation is that you may not have time to really do that... which is why it pays to look far ahead, anticipate, leave room, etc.
