Is the bike jerking forward as you put it into first, or does it die immediately in place with no jerk at all?

If it just dies immediately, it sounds like an electrical problem, and a likely culprit is a faulty sidestand switch. Another option is the clutch switch, (less likely), and least likely, is a flaky kill switch itself.

If it's just doing weird unexplainable electrical things, yet the switches seem good, another possibility is simply an old and failing battery.

EDIT: good catch Carolyn, the switch might not be faulty at all if the sidestand is accidentally left down...
