When I buy a used bike that has been I first test for compression and spark. Also look for rust in the tank.

Pay the guy and load it up.

Get it home and remove the cabs for complete dissembling, ultrasonic bath and complete rebuild.

Then I start it up.

Starting is the last thing I try once I know I have spark, clean fuel and clean carbs.

This method has yet to fail me.

You can rant all you want about carbs. If you got them you are stuck with them or you can sell the bike and move on.
