The CBR doesn't hold much oil, so I personally wouldn't run more than 3000 mi before changing - as Mr. Hero suggested - 2000 is better.
For the CBR, I would run Rotella T5 semi-synthetic in 10W-30. 30 is the recommended weight for that engine, and T5 is a good choice IMO.
Honda GN4 10W-30 doesn't test out that well from what I've seen.
I don't think the oil change interval has anything to do with the issues you are having.
