My Ninjette had a Kisan flasher unit (was installed by the PO). The timeout feature was controlled by number of flashes. If you had a brake applied, it would keep flashing until you released the brake(s) (good for when you were at a stoplight). One could also invoke emergency flasher mode or "wigwag" flash mode.
I left the Kisan unit on the bike but wasn't extremely happy with it: it would occasionally go into a weird mode that required a power-off cycle to reset it.
