Check your state laws, if your allowed to ride side by side, then be prepared to be passed side by side regardless of the lane your in.

Don't assume the original poster was on the freeway. I ride 6 lane roads in the middle of town (3 each way) and often am in the left lane because it has a raised median down the left so I only have to worry about intersections and traffic coming from the right.
