I don't think it will help as much as you're hoping. Look at
http://i.imgur.com/kYFbDcW.jpg again. Most of the shock sticks below the swingarm, including pretty much all of the moving parts. It can only help, but any fender on top of the swingarm is inherently not going to be adding much directly between the tire and the shock body.
There was an aftermarket hugger that actually extended down below the swingarm, putting itself a lot more directly between the tire and moving parts of the shock. I don't remember which one it was, but I saw it in a thread here...
