On the PreGen/500, the clutch switch bridges to the common black/yellow ground wire. On the NewGen (and I assume the 300), it bridges to the sidestand switch instead.
On the older bikes, pulling the clutch will let the bike start and run, regardless of any other switch's status. On the new bikes, pulling the clutch will only work if the sidestand is up/bypassed also.
