Like Jason said, you can make any kind of beer you want.
When you get good and understand how each ingredient influences your beer you can fine tune your recipes to what you like. Light beers are tricky for new brewers because any mistakes standout more than a strong flavored beer.
The most important thing to know is to be OCD about cleaning and sanitizing everything that comes in contact with your beer.
