Yes you can take the tank off if there's gas in it. I'm not sure how well it will paint though with the gas fumes. Just disconnect the fuel line on the petcock of it. If I remember right there's two bolts in the back. I can't remember what's up front if it just slides in something or if there's bolts up there too.
