that is a good and cautious idea.
Will it idle at like 3k? What is the absolute lowest you can get it to idle at? Once you have it idling at 4k with choke, try lowering the choke a little bit at a time until it's idling at 2500-3000 and let it idle until it accepts some throttle.
It might get better as it warms up. The other option is to find someone you trust to ride it around the neighborhood as long as possible.
