I'll tell you what, since you mentioned SRAM, I love the shifters on my Hardrock Sport.

I was worried because I really did like the Shimano EF50 shifters on the Trek 3500-3900 bikes. They felt really good to me and seemed very easy to operate. After running the trails on the Specialized Hardrock 29er, I'm totally sold on the SRAM X4-R trigger shifters. Those are just thumb shifters. It made my ride so much easier. Plus I could cover the brakes and still shift. That is the numero uno thing I like about them.

And Michael, muscle is heavy to pedal, but looks better than fat while peddling! lol
