Changing pilot jets on a stock 250

Hey guys and gals, my wife's '10 250 doesn't get used as much as it should. She only rode 800km (500miles) last season. Sometimes the bike will sit for 3 weeks at a time. When it sits for this long, it's a total nightmare to start. From what I've gathered, I need to richen the carbs a bit. I've been told all I need to do it bump the pilots from 38 to 40.
I've tried to do a search on this, but there's so many posts on jetting, and most of them are due to exhaust and/or intake mods. This bike is bone stock, and my wife has no desire for any mods.
What do you recommend? Should I just bump up the pilots? What about shimming the needles?
