Look up DOT FMVSS#108 and in California, CA ADC § 699. Front & rear separation should be at least 23". Bikes after 1973 are 16" apart. Rarely would you ever get cited, but I have. Also got ticket for riding with high-beam when my low-beam burnt out. And written up for too-loud exhaust. Ironic since cop's Harley was louder than mine.

Having said that, my pre-gen has turn-signal in empty side-pods too. We'll see how long I get away with it. > Gonna get some clear-lens and put amber-bulbs in so at least they're more distinctive and intentional as turn-signs.
