It works well enough at full throttle; it's a little clunky at anything less.

That's exactly what a quick-shifter is. It senses pressure on the shift lever, and cuts power/revs to the engine automatically for a fraction of a second to better allow the gearbox to shift up without needing to disengage the clutch.
