Glad to hear it went well! It is amazing the muscle memory growth that takes place in between sessions when first learning a new skill.
Learn to use the rear brake. It is there for a reason. Ether one can get you in trouble if you use too much, but a little skid of the rear is usually not as bad.
Does yours have ABS?
I always shift to first before coming to a stop but I shift down right before coming to a stop. Especially in traffic. You never know who is coming up from behind that you might want to get away from in a hurry.
