n00b gear questions...will this provide enough protection?

Hey everyone. I'm new to the forum, and to riding. I'm turning 40 this year, and I just bought my first bike, an EX250 from 2003. I'll be taking the MSF course soon, and I'd like to start buying some protective gear, which I'll use every time I ride. I'm approaching this new chapter with all necessary caution. I'm very excited, but also sufficiently terrified.

For now, I'm planning to ride around town, and on some back roads, with no plans for any highway riding until I feel very comfortable with the bike and my skill level. I won't be exceeding the speed limit, or at least I don't plan on it.

I know that there are a million threads on this topic, so sorry to add another, but I'm looking at a specific jacket/pant combo and I wanted to see what you guys thought. As for my preferred style, which is of course secondary, I'm looking for something that's somewhere between a cruiser and a sportbike as far as looks go. Would these provide adequate protection?

I understand that I may need to replace the back protection with something more substantial. Are these generally a one-size-fits-all, or do I need to find something specifically made for this jacket?

As an alternative, how about this one?

I don't have a tremendous amount of money to spend on gear, but I want to make sure that anything I buy is adequate for the task. If these aren't up to snuff, maybe I can look for something used, but I'd prefer new. I'm also looking for helmet ideas (sub-$150 if all all possible), and of course I'll buy some boots that cover the ankles.

Any advice you can offer would be really appreciated!
