It's not bad. The shock from an '08 250 was a nice upgrade for the 50$ I paid for it. It raised up the rear a little, and makes riding 2 up much better. It's also better when the pace picks up in the twisties. I haven't messed with adjusting the preload, I weigh 145lbs and it's been on the first setting since I installed it.
The front forks are a bit too stiff, even though the springs are still softer than recommended for my weight. I definitely don't worry about front end dive anymore. I will probably go back to the stocks springs at some point, but keep the heavier 15wt oil.
If you can find a good deal on a shock go for it. I like the J-model shock because it's made for a bike of similar weight and power, but plenty of people go for ones from other bikes. Then pick up a bottle of fork oil and you'll be good to go.
BTW with 90 series tires and the new shock I have to put a 2x4 under the centerstand to get the rear tire off the ground.
