I don't think you have to stretch opening to fit over slide all at once...

1. Warm up diaphram in hot water

2. Stretch it sideways so opening is a long slot

3. Slip into slide's retainer's slit

4. Continue to stretch & slide in and over, it should be easier once you get pass 50%, widest middle part.
