Squeal when starting up sounds familiar.

The early Honda VFRs (400, 500, 750) used to have all sorts of problems with their starter clutches. Often the starter clutch would have a crack in its housing which would make it hard for the three starter clutch "sprag" rollers to grip (to bite down and hold) the crankshaft when you press the starter button.

As this failure (a crack growing in the starter clutch housing) developed the VFR's starter clutch would go through various stages, from working fine but making some noise, to working occasionally while making more noise, to finally making a lot of noise but not starting the engine at all.
