I think I may have figured another way for you. In a tube of hot soapy water, try adjusting the diaphragm rotating and tugging on it and hopefully the lips to "pop" into the groves in the cap of the slide. Make sure you wash off all the soap too.
Yup, old one came off fine (had a tear on the OD) and now the new one is being difficult going back on. Like I said, I've got it about 1/3 of the way on. I'm going to try running it like that and see if there are any air leaks.

I saw that thread of yours while searching around and determined you were nuts!

The method you're suggesting now is essentially what I was doing, except it was warm WD-40.
