2011 ninja 250r smoking after oil change

hey i have recently changes my bikes oil filter and done an oil change. i put the filter in right and placed the correct amount of oil. i checked the oil gauge and the oil is in the correct position. i turn on the bike let it run for a while then turn on the choke lever to warm up the bike. once it warms up for a while smoke starts to come out of the engine block and the oil in the gauge disappears. now no mater how long i run the bike or let it cool their is no oil in the gauge and it still smokes when the engine is hot. also the oil light is not on when it starts to smoke and i have wiped the under side of the engine for excess oil. can someone please help me out with this??

How are you checking the oil level? Is the bike completely vertical, or is it resting on the sidestand?

/thread moved to the tech section; this help area is for help with the website, not the bike

the bike was vertical when i checked the oil level. i changed the filter so i added exactly 1.7 qt of oil. when i checked the oil gauge before i turned it on it was at the top mark.

Could you have gotten some oil on the headers? It would be tough to wipe it all off and will have to burn off.

yeah i now think that the primary cause of the smoke is just some oil rubbed on the engine that needs to just burn off. but i am still concerned about the oil gauge, it is completely empty when the bike is upright and turned off. i have even let the engine run for 2-3 min and checked it while it was still upright and their is no oil at all in their.

Then there isn't enough oil in the bike.

that is what i thought but i just checked the user manual and it says 1.6q for just an oil change and 1.7q for oil and filter change and 1.8 for a dry engine. now after i drained my oil i decided that i prob should change the filter also so my bike was draining for 2 days until i could buy the filter. so it could just be the case that i need to add .1qt more oil. but from experience have you guys checked the oil level before or after you turn your engine on? because my oil level was perfect before i turned it on. and i dont want to add too much oil because getting out excess oil would be very hard for me since i dont have the right equipment to do so. and if i was just .1qt short of oil wouldn't the oil level be at halfway and not completely empty??

Remember when an engine is running the oil is circulating around the engine you should let it stand for a while before checking the oil ,So the oil can drain back down

You check the oil with the bike off and vertical. If the bike is on you won't see anything since the oil is circulating through the engine. And like the poster above said you have to wait a little bit after turning the engine off so the oil has time to drain back down.
Also when you fill it with oil the first time this is the oil level without filling the oil filter. Thus when you turn it on the oil level will fall back down to fill the filter. Then you will add more oil with the bike off and vertical.

Talking thank you!

ok i let my bike run for like 10 min on idle and turned it off. about 30 min later when i checked the gauge it was showing my oil level again. thanks everyone! this was the first time i changed my filter, next time il know that i have to wait a while for it to get soaked
o and after seeing the oil gauge was fine i took my bike for a spin to burn off any excess oil i had rubbed on it so it would stop smoking. bike works fine now

again thanks everyone for helping me out on my first filter change!
