Rode with no oil, let it sit for a year, what should I do?
I rode my 04 without oil, I'm not sure how long it didn't have oil. I don't think it was for more than 70 miles.
I ran out of gas, I had been riding for about an hour and a half at top speed on the highway, the bike sputtered then stopped, and I realized the oil was completely empty =O. [Long story, was trying to get to court after unfortunate change of events.] Anyway I put in some 5w30 oil [it was all the shop had] and some gas, it would start up here and there but would bog out, then the battery died. So it was turning over, it's not seized. Then it sat for ~8 months, garage half the time, carport the other half. The bike was previously very well taken care of, ~10K miles. I'm really worried I scratched the cylinder walls. What should I do to get it back in shape? Here's my list so far: [ ] drain carb bowls [ ] drain gas [ ] drain oil [ ] new oil: 5w-40 Mobil 1 Diesel truck/ Delvac 1 [ ] new oil filter [ ] check compression [ ] check spark plug I read that mobil 1 has a high detergent rating, I figure I should use it to get out any metal bits that scraped off the cylinder, good idea, yes? Engine flush is no good, right? And do I need new brake fluid? Thanks so much everyone. |

Well it didn’t run without oil, a motor at high RPM will lock solid in a few seconds with no oil.
Check list looks OK but if you have oil in it now do the compression test before you change the oil. If you have to strip it down there’s no point in putting new oil in. Steve

Change the gas and start it up. If it is knocking then there is damage if it sounds OK then ride it. For get about flushing anything. The damage will be at the bearings.if you change the oil look for copper chipss like fine sand .
Changing breakfluid every two years at least . Did you get eight months ? |

Thanks guys. Nah Racer x, I got 3 months for trespassing 0_o. Girlfriends parents didn't like me haha. Haven't had money to fix up the bike, it was really sad.
Here's my updated checklist: [ ] Clean oil screen [ ] Clean carb [ ] Check valves [ ] drain carb bowls [ ] drain gas [ ] drain oil [X] new oil: 5w-40 Mobil 1 Diesel truck/ Delvac 1 [ ] new oil filter [ ] check compression [ ] check spark plug [ ] Charge batt [ ] Check oil pressure [to see if bearings are screwed] [ ] Lube chain Talking with some guys on forums.ninja250.org, we think it's unlikely that it had no oil, probably just very little. So there aren't any other fluids that need changing? Anything else I should do? |
