Fair Prices For 2005 pregens

My friend and I have been looking for bikes as his first bike. Of course telling him to get a Ninjette

He seems pretty ok with the used pre-gen idea, so we're going to look at some '05 pre-gens tomorrow.

One has 5k, one with 10800, and one with 14k. Pictures look ok, but we all know how reliable they can be

5k one is listed as 2000, 10800 as 2200(negotiable supposedly), and 14k as 1800(also listed as negotiable)

Thoughts?

I will be obnoxiously scrutinising these tomorrow

Without seeing them I would start around $1400 and don't go above $1800

Hi, the Kelley Bluebook pricing for a 2005 EX250 with an average of 9800 miles on it is $1945 ( retail , excellent condition ) to $1285 ( trade-in value, good condition ). To me they are all priced too high and I would be offering much less than their asking prices. I would cite the KBB trade-in value as your basis. Ask for service records, test ride the bikes paying particular attention to frame damage.
Good luck!

Thanks for the numbers. Yeah I will try to offer less and see what happens. I'm not the best haggler But I do agree that those prices are too high, typical Craigslist......

You'll know how much they're worth when you see them.

I looked for quite a while, saw a lot of crap bikes. Everything that I found on Craigslist was garbage (wrecked, dropped, badly weathered from being stored outside, cracked fairings, ear-splitting "boy racer" aftermarket exhausts).

Finally happened on a listing in the local paper.

When the garage door rolled up and I saw my future '05 sitting there: low miles, not a single scratch, obviously pampered, always garaged, I knew that I was going to go ahead and pay the woman what she was asking (yes, bought it from a girl). Paid $2400 in July of 2007.

Good luck finding a good one.

All of them are silver '05s lol.

Fingers crossed for a well kept one.

If my friend ever wants to get rid of it, I will be first in line Can't have too many 250s.

So, we got one of the '05s yesterday. Seller was second owner, but put most of the mileage on the bike. Pretty well maintained. Seller was extremely nice and made the transaction a snap. I test rode it and rode it 40 mins back to my friend's house. I took it on the highway and it performed quite well. Actually it was comfier than my old newgen on the highway. I actually enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

Just needs a valve adjustment/carb sync, gonna put aside a Saturday for that(yay no shims)

That is a very nice looking '05!

And Galaxy Silver #2 is without doubt the fastest color.

With regular maintenance, they are VERY reliable. With the pregen, Kawasaki managed to merge high performance with high fuel economy (avg 65-70 mpg). He wont regret buying it.

I think I am detecting some bias there.

I managed to squeeze $1800 out of my 2005. One mark on the fairing, otherwise perfect. Pre-gen value has taken a hard hit this year. If it's not pretty close to perfect, they're not gonna get full KBB for it ($1900 in my area).

Yeah the bike does look great. When I said "reliable" I was pointing to the reliability of craigslist not the bike itself. It's sometimes hard to tell from a cragislist ad whether or not the bike was taken care of. This one was, so

Craig's list does have a few winners. A LOT of bikes advertised do not have titles or have salvage titles which is pretty much the same thing.

My favorite was a kid who advertised a bike with the text "Bank has title but its OK because they wont know where you live."

I just paid $1800 for a 2005 Galaxy Silver, but it had 1676 miles on it, one 58-year-old prior owner, all service records, and perfect shape. I agree that the new ceiling on these bikes is $1750-1800, and that's for a PERFECT example.

That said, I think a really nice pre-gen is a great buy, even at that price. They're a reliable motorcycle, cheap on gas, and the parts inventory is vast. Really the only competition is the ZG1000 Connies, but that's obviously a much bigger bike.

congradulations on finding a good one, it's getting harder and harder to find really nice pre-gens. Yours sounds like a particularly fine example, with only 1600 miles, wow! That's a pre-gen "well bought" as they say at auctions.

Thanks. Yeah, I lucked into this one. It's often a case of being the guy who's got cash ready and is ready to hop in the car and go. When this one came up, I jumped at it. With used bikes, it's often "buy the seller, not the bike."

I think the pre gens do still have a lot of appeal as a practical bike for everyday use - that's why I was specifically looking for a clean stock one.

I think the new Ninjas are a little too sporty (and still expensive), CBR250s and TU250s are still too new and have small used-parts markets. TeeDubs struggle to keep highway speeds (but are otherwise just about the most amusing thing there is). XT225s are great - six-speed box helps - but otherwise, I think the old baby Ninja is still by far the most-practical small displacement bike there is.

Have put about 250 miles on it since Wednesday. I should double the current mileage in about two weeks.
