Frankenstriple 675
I've always wanted a Daytona, but the seat is sky high, way out of reach of my 30" inseam. While researching the nakkid bikes I learned that the Street Triple is a naked Daytona. Obvious to most of you, not so for the noob like me. Aside from cosmetics(fairings, bars, etc.) the STri engine has been tuned down for hooliganism, and it has a different subframe.
So..... I came up with this. |

this is awesome. the daytona's my dream bike, too. if they sold the street triple with the fairing option you fotochopped up there, I'd do questionable things to put the money together for one.

I love it! I'm a vertically-compact American as well and most bikes are not a good fit for me.

That's a lot of work (and a fugly pipe) to lose 1" of seat height. Shave some foam off the seat (Triumph even sells low seats for a lot of their bikes) and get some thick-soled boots.

The seat in your photoshopped picture actually looks higher than the 675 stock.

Have you tried sitting on one? I'm 5'8" with a 30 inch inseam and I tippy toe on my 600RR that has a 32.5in seat height. The Daytona is also pegged at 32.5in, but the bike is a lot slimmer and compresses more when sitting on it so I actually get about two thirds my feet down or comfortable left foot flat when slightly leaned. Shave the seat an inch and I can probably flat foot it.

Actually it's not a lot of work, and actually not "too" expensive depending on route (less than a grand). I believe the STr suspension is actually a little lower besides the tail subframe being taller on the Daytona(1" for insulation and under tail exhaust, not a whole lot of seat to shave). The STr has twin cans on the outside of the tail (to allow for lower seat, plus its thicker.. easier to shave that last 1").
The daytona was originally designed with the STr planned, so all the body attachments are hidden, easier to produce a nakkid later. (internet is great, learn so much) If I wanted to keep the top end of the daytona, I would just have to swap out the rear subframe. Daytonas have been around longer so it's easier to find used (affordable) around $6 grand. The STr on the other hand is a bit harder to find (at least the searches I've done) they are newer model so the ones I've seen have tended to be new (almost 9 grand). I would imagine the odds are a crashed bike will have front end damage, so it might be easier to find a used STr rear end then to find a Daytona front end. The headlight assembly for Dayt is more expensive than the taillight of STr. I would say overall its better to switch back of Daytona, than front of STr. Here is someones handiwork already. It's branded as a STr, but he has the clip ons and tank from the Daytona. |

for me, the attractive thing about the street triple is that the engine's been retuned for more practical street use (but I suppose that's an irrelevant point if you plan on taking it to the track relatively often).
while we're dreaming, if you can hold out a little longer.... http://www.mvagustausa.com/web-mvagusta/10_F3.html#one |

I have a friend with an 09 Triple. He absolutely loves it. He's 5'4" and has no problem with riding it. However, he will not back up the bike while on it. He always get's off before moving it. Thought naked, it a pretty heavy bike. We always laugh when we are backing out of a parking space and he is pushing the bike out.

The speed triple has a higher seat as well
Speed Triple: 32.1" inches @ 416.7 lbs. Street Triple: 31.5" @ 368.2 lbs. Daytona: 32.5" or 33" @ 356 lbs. (depending on source) Ninja 250r: 30.5" @ 374 lbs. If I swap out the back end of the Daytona Frankenstriple: 31"(shaved) @ 340 lbs. + 125hp = |

Triumph USA lists all those weights as 50lbs more than you listed (wet weight). I believe 375 is wet weight for the Ninja too, so not a fair comparison.

So Cindy put me onto this thread as I've been looking for a upgrade bike for her in the future and a possible track bike for me. The 675 has long been one of my favorite bikes in the 600cc range and I've ridden a few. I've got a 30 inch in seam and had no problem touching at all. My buell's unleaden seat height is 31 inches. I have the balls of me feet solid on the ground. If the ground is unlevel I usually end up with one foot flat foot with the other on the peg no problem.
On the 675 with the preload adjusted a little stiff for my weight I was almost able to flat foot it. This was on a 2010 SE Daytona. Riding it took some getting used to as it is considerably skinner than my buell. If you want a more upright seating position you can always go with Heli Bars that will raise it just over an inch I believe. |

You could be right about the weight, not sure now If i referenced dry or wet.
I have sat on a CBR600 (too high) a GSXR600 (Good fit, ugly bike), I have yet to try either triumph, I'm strictly going by numbers. If I swap out the back end of the Daytona Frankenstriple: seat 31"(shaved), @ 340 lbs., 125hp, 9 Gs used (guesstimate) Guesstimate based on Mods (everything currently listed on Ebay): 08 Triumph Street Triple 675 Rear Subgrame Sub Frame: $149 Triumph Street Triple 675 Full Seat: $73 Roulette Green Seat Cowl Kit - Triumph Street Triple: $150 Triumph Street Triple 675 Rear Fender Tail Fairing: $35 09 triumph street triple R right tail fairing cowl: $50 09 triumph street triple R left tail fairing cowl: $50 Triumph Street Triple 675 Undertail Tail Fairing Tray: $40 TRIUMPH STREET TRIPLE TAIL LIGHT INTEGRATED SIGNL 08 09: $75 Misc fasteners wires: $50 Mods $672 GP Slip On Exhaust $429 2008 Triumph Daytona $7150.00 (7050 mls) Shipping from Kenosha, WI $500 Tune up $300 Paint $500 Not counting anything I can offset by selling Daytona parts. I think 10grand for a 125hp 340lbs bike made to my measurements is not bad. A brand new Daytona is $9999.00 Sure it would be a lot less work, but one of the aspects I like most about motorcycles is being able to make it your own. Personalization is very attractive to me, and I know this bike would be a little unique. Very low chance of someone showing up to bike night with the same thing. One thing is for sure, you can't say I don't make an educated purchase... lol I must have some German heritage I'm so anal retentive. |
