Are Lenovo computers any good?

My 10 yr old desktop computer is almost done.

Not looking to spend crazy money since all I need the computer for is web surfing, watching vids, and editing vids for the novice.

I've only owned Dell computers and kinda want to explore other brands. Anyone have experience with Lenovo computers?

Kinda want to stay away from HP computers since I've personally experienced my brother-in-law have all sorts of problems.

Which brand/model would you recommend in the $300-$500 price range?

I agree with this. With all the new technology now a days, its all essentially the same. Buy the lenovo, if you dont like it, wipe it and put a fresh copy of windows on it. Full Desktop setup these days are soo cheap, its ridiculous.

I recommend wiping any store bought computer and starting with a fresh windows installation.

Gross Macs are over priced and unnecessary.

Lenovos are awesome, but to pricey for me as well.

Ive had good luck with Asus, Acer, and Dell. But I know people have problems with Dell all the time. However if you are under warranty they take great care of you. I used to be a dell tech certified technician and they do seem to like to break a lot... but personally (im on one right now) they are cool.

also since we are talking desktop I would just say you should build your own! Itd most likely be cheaper and youd get a better machine

Acer is making some really nice desktops these days, I'd take them over Lenovo for those. As far as laptops are concerned, The Thinkpad Edge is great bang for the buck. If I had to buy a PC laptop, that's probably what I'd get, but I'm a Mac guy. my next laptop will likely be a MBA 11"

it's not just about the hardware either, look at the service as well. Lenovo has really good support, Acer isn't too bad to deal with for the most part. Stay as far away from HP as possible. Their service and support is the worst I've ever experienced, and sadly I get to deal with them a lot since I work at a small computer shop.

I'd rather perform my own colonoscopy with an angle grinder than spend 10 minutes on the phone with HP, it's that bad.

All the prefab ones are more or less the same. Cheapest bulk mobo and bulk ram and bulk HD of a particular size they can find. As someone said, wipe the factory windows install with a clean one.

It's definitely beneficial to build your own if you're up for it.

Oh you Mac haters!!!

PC's have their place especially if you have specialized software(i.e. quickbooks etc. ) I have a Dell and a Toshiba laptop. Two Dell Desktops and my work computer is a Dell. For my personal needs I mostly use my iMac.

If you do get a pc wipe it and install fresh Windows. Don't forget to download Windows Security Essentials and install.

On almost all my home PC's I also have different versions of Linux partitioned.

I prefer Linux over Windows.

I also use Open Office.

Interested in trying Linux?

I forgot.

Don't throw away that old computer!

There is a Linux Distro that can run on basically you RAM alone or a thumb drive.

If you have an old computer that is collecting dust try Puppy Linux. Quick download and like I said can run on your ram alone. Usually a min of 128mb.

It's fun (and sometimes frustrating) to build your own PC, but decent general purpose desktop PCs are so cheap now that unless you're building a machine for a specific purpose, your best bet is to just look for a good deal from a major manufacturer. www.woot.com sometimes has great deals on desktop PCs, often with good specs. www.dealnews.com is good too for finding all the online coupons and whatnot. If you've got your heart set on a Lenovo, by all means check out outlet.lenovo.com. I got my last ThinkPad laptop there for hundreds of dollars less than new.

As far as Lenovo goes, let me start by saying it's pretty hard to screw up a desktop PC these days. A PC from any of the major players should be fine. If I had to list desktop PC manufacturers (laptops are a whole other animal) in my own order of preference, it would go like this:

Dell
HP
Lenovo
Sony
Acer

Maybe it's just because I've worked with them for many years in my career, but Dell seems to have it down to a science. I've never been a big fan of Acer. I've never had to call HP for support, but I see someone else here is not a fan.

I don't use Macs enough to have a strong opinion. It seems like you pay a premium, but generally end up with a high quality product. I use both Windows and Linux, and while I love using Ubuntu on my ThinkPad, I think I'd have to say my Windows 7 box is more stable.

Good luck and have fun shopping!

I actually work for Lenovo. As far as features are concerned, any generation computer Laptop/Desktop is going to be the same internally. Its about who supports their product.

I owned a ThinkPad for over a year and it withstood a hell of a lot of abuse. I dropped it from about four feet into a concrete floor landing screen side down. It crashed the hard drive and customer support overnighted a new hard drive and told me to return the old one no questions asked.

I believe if you buy their Think line of products, you get excellent IBM customer support. I only wish I extended the warranty.
