Kickstand springs fell off
Hey guys,
On my way into work this morning, the kickstand springs decided to depart my motorcycle. This caused the bike to shut off, and I had to pull over to the shoulder on the highway. Luckily, I had a roll of electrical tape in my backpack, and just taped the kickstand up and made it the rest of the way to work. I called around the the Kawi dealers around here, and no one had the springs/kickstand in stock. So, while on lunch I had my coworker take me over to Lowes to see if they had a spring that would suffice. I ended up finding the perfect spring to replace the stock OEM springs. It's silver, but you could always paint it black. I don't really care: Here's a pic of the packaging, in case someone wants to buy the same thing: Pictures are probably too big to display inline, but here's a link to the album: http://imgur.com/a/coF6e |

Is it nice and tight when the stand is retracted? Apparently the old ones were not, or something snagged them.

Yes, it is definitely nice and tight. This one isn't going anywhere. The old ones always felt a little bit sloppy to me. It had too much play towards the bike and away from the bike. With this one, when you push the kickstand towards the bike, it springs back into place when you let go. |

I'm not trying to find fault, but if the stand has a lot of play like that, maybe that's what allowed the original springs to get loose when the stand was retracted. It seems like a common problem with my old motorcycles that the stand's pivot bolt and clevis will get worn and let the stand get sloppy. I've had to replace the bolt, and weld and grind the clevis on more than one.

You are correct. Because there was so much play, that's what caused the springs to fall off. You're also correct that clevis/bolt is worn. (The springs were also clearly on their last legs) I do have a welder, it's over at my dad's at the moment. I suppose I could have ground and weld it. However, for the time being a heavier tension spring has seemed to resolve the issue. |

Keep it greased and it may be OK for quite a few years.

I have a 2008 Ninja 250 with 63k miles. I got similar problem about 5 years ago. It happened a couple of times on freeway. It was very dangerous. I took the bike to dealer to replace the spring and made adjustment for the kickstand. Since then, I have no problem with the kickstand.
