I have a few cameras/camcorders:

My best one is a Canon XSi DSLR with the kit lens, a 50mm lens, and 70-200 lens

Then I have two Canon point and shoots, one for me and one for the wife.

I have a JVC Everio HD camcorder

And a Sony Bloggie that I mount on my bike and carry around for whatever.

I was really considering buying the Drift HD170 from B&H because it's on sale for 170 but I don't need another camera so I went and bought Gears of War 3 instead

Look into the new Canon's. They shoot very high res photos, above 12 mp's and they shoot high def video now as well.

I'm still hemming and hawing about the Nikon 1 series. I want something that takes better pics and better video than our current 10 MP point and shoot Sony, but don't want something as large as a traditional DSLR. The new Compact System cameras, like the Sony NEX and the Nikon 1 do appeal to me, but with a lens on them they are too large to be pocketable, though they would fit in a tankbag reasonably easily.

I have a friend who has this and it is pretty compact and packed full of features and a long zoom and great video.

The Lumix does get good reviews, and at that price, it's a great deal. If I do get another point & shoot, I might end up with the Canon S100. Link on Amazon.

Pentax K-X is my go to. Might pick up a 4/3 eventually for when I want an easy p&s. I wouldn't buy a sony though - for no particular reason... I just hate the brand on the whole.

I currently use a Canon PowerShot S95. It's what a lot call a "middle camera" because of its manual option. I saw one of the Nikon 1 series cameras in my local electronics store and nearly died. Those things are beautiful and, from what I could tell from the demo camera, takes decent photos.

Is this guy still looking at one or are we just talking about what one we have at this point? lol

I bought my wife a Cannon T3i in sept. I occasionally use it. Its pretty nice. We didnt get a high enough class SD card though apparently so i havent been able to record HD video with it yet. However I just bought one for my gopro so I may use them interchangeably

Cameras

Going to start saving up to replace my old DSLR. What would you recommend? I've had excellent luck with Nikon. Pretty much with DSLR's, it is either Nikon or Canon.

What do you use and what would you recommend? This will be a PURCHASE. I'm talking body, spare battery, and a couple of lenses. Maybe even a separate flash assy. I'm the photographer in the family, so might as well have the goods to back up that label. LOL j/k

Seriously though, any recommendations? My old DSLR...well, my Nikon Coolpix point and shoot has better resolution that the DSLR.

Well what's your old one? What lenses do you have? Go to slickdeals and search for t3i or t4i. There have been some killer deals lately.

I am a Nikon fan-girl for sure!
I love my d3000, even though it is an entry level one, it seems to get the job done well. Plus you can get used ones online for awesome prices, like $300 or so.

If I were to upgrade, I think I would grab a d90, but I haven't had any experiences with using them.

Are you interested in the mirrorless cameras with APS-C sensors? I'm currently looking for a camera myself. Right now, I'm looking at the Sony Nex line, specifically the Sony Nex 5r (it just came out), but there is the 6r (also just came out) and 7r, respectively. They are also bringing out the new e-mount pancake lenses for these cameras. I'm also looking at the Sony RX100, but that's a point and shoot camera with a 1 inch sensor.

My old school SLR is a Pentax and I loved it. I still own it, though I never use it.

I actually prefer the mirror. I hate having to view the image through the dinky screen. The hybrids are somewhat lacking on lens choices as well. Shutter noise isn't an issue either (which the hybrids are known for being nice and quiet).

My old camera is a Nikon D50. It is a little tired...I've had it for 6 years now. It needs to be retired...maybe if one of my nieces is interested in photography, I can simply give it as a present.

So far I have been eying the Nikon D3200 and D5100, along with the Canon T4i and EOS 60D. Lots of choices out there...

Well, for whatever it's worth, there is a viewfinder on the Nex 6 and 7, plus hotshoe, etc. Sample of what the Sony Nex-7 can do: http://www.youtube.com/user/photoru1ru

Also I should say that Canon Nikon Sony and Pentax all make good camera's just find the one that fits you the best. Also if you have friends or family that have one brand it might be a good idea to get the same brand so you can share lenses.

We just bought one of these. Great pictures, easy to use, still small and relatively pocketable. We were considering the mirrorless compacts like the Nikon 1, but those are still larger than optimal. All of our small cameras have taken reasonable pictures outside with plenty of light, but the RX100 finally takes great pictures indoors, with only limited light. Video quality is incredible as well, with 1080p at 60 fps.

Yeah, it's the best point and shoot camera out there currently due to it's 1 inch sensor size, low light capabilities, etc. I can't decide if I want the Nex 5r or RX100. I don't really want to lug around a huge camera (even though the Nex is quite small compared to traditional DSLR's), but at the same time, I want really good quality pictures and video. Ah, decisions, decisions.

Right, the S100 is a still a great choice as well. It was a reasonable purchase at full price, and now that's running about half that, I almost pulled the trigger on it instead of the Sony.

I wish i knew you were in the market for a dslr...i had a nikon d90 with a 50mm 1.8f and a 35mm 1.8f and i parted with it as well at a bag and a polarizer for a measly $500 because i needed money =\ it only had 6k actuations too...that kid got a a steal of a deal.

Well sharing lenses is out because my family is of the point-and-shoot variety. I am the only photographer wannabee in the group. I use DSLR's because I HATE waiting for a stupid P&S to focus, and often miss shots because of that. My family considers me the photographer because I use angles and different points of view to achieve good shots. Everyone else just stands there, points the camera (maybe adjusts the zoom) and presses the button. I get down on the ground and move around to get the shot I want. Plus I kind of like it. Of course there are times I just want to sit back and relax, but most of the time I don't mind taking the pictures. The only problem with that is that I am rarely in any of them.

So yeah, swapping lenses...not relevant.

I have been looking over DPREVIEW.com a bit lately. I almost think they have too much information on that site.

What's the most recent P&S you've played with? The focus times seem quite short to me at this point, even with the less expensive ones now. There are certainly other compromises with smaller cams, but I wouldn't have thought lens speed or focus time would be near the top of the list.

I ended up buying a Lumix DMC-FH8 a few months ago. The price was incredible, and I like both the features and the size of the camera. The outdoor pictures are pretty good with it, both sharp and bright. The color representation is OK, but not great. For $140, I'd certainly buy it again, and it will probably remain my go-to motorcycling camera for awhile. It also takes great 720P video, and has decent battery life.

But - its indoor performance has been terrible. The flash is weak, and the sensor just does not work well unless it's quite bright. Indoor portraits look iffy, group shots are worse, no matter how much I played with the settings.

We really wanted to be able to take some nice shots for the Thanksgiving dinner we were planning this year, so we splurged on a Sony RX100 based on its reviews. The new camera is incredible, with great shots in light where the Lumix was terrible. 1080p video at 60fps means our online storage is going to fill up fast.

My Coolpix is only a year old. I just am not a fan of point and shoot. Honestly, the thing sits more often these days. The iPhone 4S of mine takes good pics and focuses really quickly in comparison.

Like if I am photographing an autosport race, I can lose a shot with a P&S because I have to raise the camera, press the button, then it focuses and takes the pic. A DSLR, I simply focus in on the turn, or whatever, I want to shoot, then click it over to MF, and I just raise the camera and toggle the shutter when the car hits that precise point in the track. Great pics, every time. Plus, kids rarely sit still when they are having a good time, so when I am taking pictures of my nieces and nephews, having the ability to quickly set things up and click off several pictures very fast is great.

I have several reasons I prefer DSLR to P&S systems, but I won't get into all that here.

Makes sense. Some of the P&S's like the RX100 and S100 allow that as well, with dedicated MF modes.
