mileage question
Hey guys,
I was wondering what is considered high mileage on new gens? Over 8k over 10k? Over 15k? I'm asking cause I've seen some bikes with over 8k for sale al the way to over 19k in mileage for sale. And wondered if I should stay away from them? Or not? Thanks |

Umm last I saw the 19k was going for like 3,000 there is a 16k going for like 3500 and the 8k was like 4200. But I've seen up to 4500 so like 2900 to 4500 in pricing

is there a general rule of thumb? i mean, like for cars, it's 12k miles for every year how old it is.

One of the major things is ~7500mi is the first major valve service, 15,000mi the second, 24,000mi the third. I know a lot of people will sell their bike just before or at a major service interval to avoid having to pay that much for standard maintenance.

Regular maintenance performed negates most mileage, until you get in the 40,000-50,000 range. While the bike may be perfectly fine, the value will begin to sharply drop.
My '05 250 is up to 40,000 miles. I paid $1600 in December '06 with 1500 miles on it.

Totally depends on how it's taken care of and ridden. My '06 has 35K (33K by me) on it and is in great shape.

The higher the mileage, the more important documented maintenance is... I haven't experienced any issues with mine up until 50K... I started to get some blow-by on the pistons and will be doing the rings this winter. Also, listen carefully to the engine at idle - any clicking? If so, the cam chain is probably slapping, and an indication of a poorly maintained tensioner which could possibly hint at other poor maintenance.

I'm going to be putting 115+ miles per day on my bike for 5 days a week starting tomorrow. I'm somewhat nervous about it, but I'm sure if I keep up with the maintenance regularly, it'll be fine.
I know of a dude who has over 200k miles on his CBR600 & it seems to be running fine. The Ninjette has got to be just as reliable, right? Now with that said, I'm okay with ME putting a lot of miles on my bike, but if I'm looking for another bike, I'd look for the lowest miles possible.

30k miles was the benchmark of an unkept ninjette, while 70k minimum for kept totally proper.

She'll be fine bro, just keep in mind it's temporary. I chose to work with prisoners (was state employee with contacts) and had to drive same distance to give them a reachout for re-entry. I saw the new 650R and commuted 18 months on that ride (awesome). The 250 will do the whole ironbutt but my question is why do it cause it can, get more comfort, better cruising speeds etc. I sold the 650R after 2 yr. ownership. Later stole a 500 ninja before word got out they were being dis-continued, $5500 msrp+ add-ons for $3800 OTD due to shipping damage. |
