Would you rather be defined by integrity and generosity or by title and possessions?

Id rather die with people knowing what I have done in life , not what I owned.

Paulette, I guess you can't go through life without having made a bad decision or a bad choice. The reality is that we don't really make mistakes--we just pay a hell of a lot of tuition. At times circumstances put us into a position where we must make a decision--regardless. As a Medic in Vietnam, I had to "Triage"--that was to treat the least wounded first (so they can return to duty) and the most serious casualties last. I railed at that notion because I knew that in some cases, with serious injuries, time was your enemy. I know of no Medic who is still not running the "should haves and would haves" around in their heads like a broken record--and that is 40 years later. Many of your former countrymen are trapped in that same mental prison as a result of Russia's involvement in Afganistan. I can relate to them. It was a situation, just like ours, where we had no choice. Governments do that--however the individual is stuck with the consequences. One tends to, over the years, adjust to the situation, but one never gets over it. Ultimately we are responsible for our actions--I am not sure as to who will make that judgement. So much for a snippet on ethics. Very good question, Paulette. A countryman of yours, Dostoevsky, dealt with that issue in "Crime and Punishment" It still left more questions than answers. Perhaps that is the big issue with humanity--there are no answers. Maybe there was redemtion for Raskolnikov.
