I have some Teknic brand jeans with the same design using kevlar.
I use them under my Aerostich 1 piece suit as extra protection, but have never used them as my only riding leg protection. As jeans, they function well and I wear them where ever jeans could be worn. Saying that, I suppose they would offer more protection as regular jeans, so if you regularly ride with jeans, this is a better option. An even better option would be to get some dedicated riding pants that can fit over your regular clothes for causal riding and then some serious riding gear for when you expect the speeds and risks to pick up. |

I've been using Joe Rocket overpants ( http://www.newenough.com/protective_...overpants.html )
But I'm thinking it's time for a change to better gear I have no problem changing once I get to work when I'm commuting. |

I have a pair of the black combat style draggin jeans that I wear in summer for commuting to work.. that way I can wear them at work too without changing... They're pretty good for road rash prevention (not that I have ever tested mine!) but not much good for impact, although I have a pair of Hood Jeans (http://www.hoodjeans.co.uk) with kevlar and Knox armour in them that according to a mate of mine who has crash tested them will do as good a job as armoured leathers!

I'm a fan of Shift's Havoc pants. They're half leather, half textile, and loose enough that they comfortably fit over jeans so I can wear 'em to work and just pull 'em off like a jacket to appear in my normal, non-superhero work attire.

Then why do most pro riders, who can dictate what they prefer to wear for track protection, opt for leather? If aramid were superior, I'd think every one on the track would be using it.

Leather by far and away is the be all end all of abrasion protection (especially that japanese cow-hide or whatever RS Tai Chi uses). Kevlar is ok, and i think cordura is up there in terms of textile protection.....but unless the pants, in its entirety, is covered with endless patches of kevlar, the reinforced jeans are really only a step above regular jeans. I have a pair of the Icon strong arm jeans, which only have aramid sewn around the knees....not the greatest protection, and no armor at all....but its better than nothing. That being said, I do believe the "hood" brand denim riding pants offer jeans with armor installed. Draggin' has something similar but its velcro'd in or something. Its worth looking into i think.
Once my budget permits, I'm gonna try and spring for those ultra fancy cordura touring pants that the bmw crowd seems to enjoy. I refuse to wear leather pants on the street....I'm not into the 80's pornstar look |

If money is no object, check out eSquad jeans.. fashionable.. no rhino butt syndrome or grandpa's Levi's look.
The eSquad jeans material is stronger and more abrasion resistant than leather but I don't have the budget to drop $400 on a pair of jeans |

When I bought my bike last Summer I picked up a pair of Cortech DSX denim pants with leather inserts. I'm not really a denim guy and did not like the overall fit. So, I just bought a pair of Fieldsheet Four Season pants. With the liner removed the mesh makes them really cool, plus the light grey color does not soak up the sun as black does. Anyone need a size 32W/34L pair of Cortechs?

Anybody see Rossi dump it on a wet turn yesterday? The close ups while he was trying to get his bike back up showed some seriously rashed leather on his forearm and back, but he didn't hesitate getting back on the bike. Only leather slides and takes abuse like that and I doubt GP riders would consider wearing anything else.

I always wear jeans when I ride, unless I'm wearing my one peice teknics suit. I find lately that I'm commuting to work more then getting out and ripping up twisties. Its just easier wearing jeans. That said, they tear through like a knife in butter when you go down. I've seen it first hand. Yikes! I don't think these "riding jeans" are much better then a pear of double walled carrhart work pants.

I have alpine stars knee/shin gaurds I can use under my pants. I wear baggy cargo pants so I can use them with whatever I have on. I only use them when Im going on a spirited ride though, not when just commuting around town.

Denim Option
Check out the Sliders Riding jeans. They have more kevlar coverage than the Draggin jeans and seem to me to be a bit more stylish as well. The price is right too. I use the A*'s armor underneath....
http://www.compacc.com/p.cfm/c/1001002/p/19235 They also have cargos and flat front chinos(both next on my list) for business casual. I could where these with a polo straight to my job. They also use genuine DuPont Kevlar. |

I just checked out the site for those hood jeans. They have even more Kevlar than the sliders. I may have to look into a pair of those! I see they offer liners too...

I also noticed you are from Daytona. I have heard of this place. Are you beachside? Does hitting a cow equate to crashing with leather?

and yeah i'm from the daytona area (actually a suburb that people out of the area wouldn't recognize so its just easier to tell them i live in daytona). i don't live on the beach but i'm close enough to it that i can get there in 20 min or so. and yes hitting the cow does qualify as crashing with leather. i swear if i had hit anything else at 40mph head on like i did i'd probably be dead. cows are nice and squishy |

Sounds like an utter disaster. Where are the cows around Daytona? Deltona, Deland, Lake Helen?

So was the cow in the road or you in the pasture?
I've been on that road before. I'll starting looking out for cows. I'm usually looking out for cowgirls!

What were headed to Cassadaga to get your fortune told?
I ride a nice loop that takes me from Daytona through some nice roads in Deland (Marsh Rd Reynolds Rd) to De Leon Springs. Then Audubon Rd to Grand Ave through Glenwood to W Bereford Ave to Fatio Rd (back in Deland) to McGregor. Then (either over to Lake Helen) or down 17-92 to Enterprise Rd. Then I get on Lake Shore Dr to Enterprise Osteen Rd to Maytown Rd almost to Oakhill. I go left on Beacon Light Rd and head north to Volco, cut through a neighborhood (in Edgewater) and get on Old Mission Rd towards New Smyrna. I go left on Glencoe and left on Pioneer and then right on Turnbull Bay. I go north of the New Smyrna airport and onto RT 1 and back to Daytona. All killer roads and hardly any traffic ever. It takes a few hours and has great turns, hills, and hardly any cows. When you get another bike I'll take you through the course (no crashing though).

I need to pick up a pair of riding pants, right now I'm just using some Knee armor that I use with my regular jeans. My biggest problem is getting a pair of pants that actually fit me I have a 28" waist with a 28" inseam. I have also been thinking of just saving up and getting a custom 2-piece or 1-piece done. Oh and has anyone checked out some of the new textile sport riding pants with spots for knee sliders?
