Seriously though, when are we going to see an American be competitive in MotoGP again?

Soon hopefully, the rc390 cup will be big in growing the talent field. Unfortunately Josh Herrin showed that doing well in the american superbike series doesn't mean you'll do well in moto2. I feel as though switching to WSBK would have been a better idea for him. Easier transition and all.

Gonna be a while...

As Sirref noted, Josh Herrin made a jump from AMA Champion to Moto 2 - and it didn't end well.

Top AMA Superbike rider Blake Young rode fill-in/wildcard at a couple U.S. MotoGP events - and that didn't end well either.

Nicky Hayden has wrist injuries that aren't completely resolved, and his non-factory Honda was down on power and top speed.

Ben Spies looks like he is going to stay retired after shoulder injuries.

I don't see any hot up-and-comer from the U.S. jumping in and being competitive any time soon...

Yeah my last true american racing hero was ben spies, he's someone who could have been competitive at the top level but had to run into some really bad luck.

Looks like it was 2012 when Rapp rode the Attack Kawasaki as a wildcard in a couple U.S. MotoGP events. I think Blake Young rode it as wildcard at Laguna in 2013 - and it ended-up as junk (broke the frame IIRC).

Currently only Hayden has a shot at doing much of anything.

It should also be noted that American Colin Edwards just retired near the end of this season after numerous seasons in the premier class (not sure how many years exactly - but plenty).
