Help please
Hi I just bought a 1987 ninja 250 engine on ebay, took the older spark plugs out, then went to put the new iridum plugs in, tightened both by hand then did 1/2 on first 1, on 2nd 1 went to do 1/2 turn and the plug sheared off.
Anyway bought an extractor, removed the broken plug it came out very clean no dmg, went to put yet another new spark plug in and now it refused to go in. I don't want to force it what do i do now? Last futzed with by BloodFX; May 1st, 2020 at 02:27 AM. |

I fixed it, after using my mini usb cam on a wire to look at the threads I could see the very top of sparkplug thread was damaged, and I made this diy threadchaser and within 1/4 of a turn it was fixed. Thanks anyway I love this forum. Last futzed with by BloodFX; March 19th, 2020 at 02:28 AM. Reason: image to big |

I have a few more questions, if i put a 1987 gpx 250 in my eliminator 250 will i have to rejet the carbs, i noticed from my manual older engines use different jets and needles?
Secondly i never took a photo of my coils when i stripped bike to the bone to be restored, do green and red coil wires go to left side or the right? Manual says green and red go to cylinder 1 but with no reference to direction front. Is cylinder 1 on the left, as if your sat on the bike? |

Yes, direction is of rider on bike facing forward. Left cylinder is #1 from rider's seat.

Thanks and any advice on the jetting side please, or is that just related to the gpx airbox maybe?

Airbox on Ninja and Eliminator should have similar flow-rates, way more than either engine needs; therefore no differences using either.
Jetting change on pre-gen 250s was due to changes in cam-specs. Go with jetting that matches '87 engine regardless of which bike it's in. |

Yes, for most part '86-87 are what I consider 1st-gen with CVK32 carbs using metal slides. I think you can use '88-94 pre-gen carbs on those as engines and power-output curves are similar. In some markets, the pre-gen started in '87 as well. Post some photos of your '87 engine, it might be pre-gen rather than 1st-gen depending upon where you got it.
The '95+ bikes has milder cams to give more mid-range along with carb-specs to match. |

In a bit of a pickle, I've tried starting the engine off the bike on a bench, it turns over but no spark?
Is this because of the gen cover and eliminator stator I put on the engine or something I missed? |

It's flywheel & triggers and pickup-coils that needs to match ECU.
The '86-87 uses an analogue-style ignition-system, so you'll need to get harness and ECU from '86-87 EX250 to get that engine to work. Or more commonly done upgrade '86-87 to digital electronics used in '88+ bikes. You'll need to transfer over from EL250 engine: flywheel & pickup-coils. I'm unsure about positioning of pickup-coils, if they're at same degree-offset between '86-87 vs '88+ bikes. I've got one of each, so if I have some time, I can crack them open and see... need to re-seal flywheel-cover on my '02 anyway as it's leaking. |

So a 1994 eliminator stator and stuff is completely different?
Edit: think i misread your message, I have swapped the flywheel already and stator and cover. just found my original owners manual for the eliminator 1994 d4. ignition timing 10 degrees btdc@1300rpm 42 degrees btdc @ 4500 rpm Reading online it says 1987 model is 5 degress btdc@1300rpm the rest is the same. Specs may look similar, but electronics are completely different between '86-87 and later generations. You'll need to transfer EL250 '94 pickup-coils over to '87 engine as well. That should be all that's left to make it work.

I finally got my jet kit after waiting a month, was wondering as it says to remove the airbox snorkel and make a 2" opening, will this affect low end driveability, or shall i just do it?
